Dr. Andrew Hamsher
Chief Academic Officer & Co-Founder, NeXT | Cultural Historian, PhD, NeXT / The University of Texas at Austin
Hamsher is a universe builder — a cultural historian who spent years studying how Marvel industrialized the process of creating interconnected narrative worlds, then brought that understanding to building an accreditation system at NeXT. His dissertation argued that Marvel's factory-like production process, refined over decades, reshaped how Hollywood authors stories in the 21st century. At NeXT, he applies that same structural thinking: how do you build a credentialing universe where each component — each credential, each hour log, each citation of distinction — connects to a larger, coherent whole? His academic training in American Studies at UT Austin gives him the cultural literacy to understand that accreditation is not just bureaucratic process but a form of authorship — the formal narration of what someone has learned and become.
Narrative
Andrew Donaldson Hamsher is a cultural historian and co-founder of the original ecosystem that today operates as BeNeXT Global, Futuro las Américas, and NeXT. He and Héctor H. López first met as next-door neighbors on the sixth floor of Village C East at Georgetown University during their freshman year — two students whose opposing instincts on philosophy, politics, and culture became the engine of a friendship and, eventually, of a forty-year ecosystem-in-the-making. They roomed together as sophomores. Andrew studied film at NYU and went on to earn his PhD in American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin — a 440-page dissertation on authorship, transmedia storytelling, and the rise of superhero cinema, "You've Become Part of a Bigger Universe": Authorship, Stan Lee, and the Rise of Superhero Cinema. In 2011 he and Héctor launched what was then called NeXT — New Exponential Thought Organization — the single umbrella that over the years split into BeNeXT for institutional design, Futuro for the convening community, and NeXT for credentialing. Andrew was there at Futuro's original architecture and at every hallmark Georgetown formation that followed. At NeXT he does the same thing he studied at Marvel: builds the architecture for a universe of credentials where each component connects to a larger, coherent whole.
Hamsher's dissertation demonstrates that authorship in industrialized creative systems is not a romantic myth of solitary genius but a collaborative, structured process — and that the most powerful cultural products emerge when that process is made legible and credited. At Marvel, Stan Lee redefined how creative labor was credited while simultaneously asserting his own authorial presence. At NeXT, Hamsher does something parallel: he builds a system that makes learning legible — that credits the experiential, the informal, and the unconventional alongside the traditional. His cultural historian's eye ensures that NeXT's credentials are not just bureaucratic instruments but narrative acts — formal recognitions that tell the story of what someone has learned.
Anima Key
Every universe needs an architecture. He builds the one that makes learning visible.
Why They Belong
- Co-founded NeXT — the accreditation platform at the heart of the ecosystem's credentialing mission
- PhD from UT Austin in American Studies — brings doctoral-level cultural analysis to educational innovation
- Dissertation on transmedia authorship directly informs how interconnected credentialing systems are designed
- Understands that accreditation is a form of authorship — the formal narration of what someone has become
- Signs NeXT Citations of Distinction as Chief Academic Officer — the institutional voice behind every credential
Legacy Vector
Andrew Hamsher studied how Stan Lee and Marvel built the most successful narrative universe in American popular culture — then co-founded NeXT to build an accreditation universe that does the same thing for learning. His legacy is the architecture that makes experiential credentials carry institutional weight.
